ABOUT MILLICENT HARVEY
Images are often the first way people will experience a place, whether online, through publication or award consideration. I never want to simply document a place. I want to discover it, experience it, and surprise my clients by showing them something they may not have expected. By paying attention to the nuances of the space — the details as well as the overview — my images convey a sense of place through light and shadow, texture and movement. I like to be on a site throughout the day and in various kinds of weather. So much is revealed at unexpected times.
Working since 1990 as a commercial and fine art photographer, my years of experience are reflected in my technical skills, the way I see, and my attention to light and composition. I photograph landscapes because I connect to the subject matter emotionally and I bring that connection to each new project that I photograph. Landscapes, for me, are spiritual, grounding and motivating.
My clients are landscape architects, architects, designers and landscape contractors. I also photograph for regional and national publications and in the field of agriculture.
Born and raised in Boston, I am located in Palm Springs and I work nationally. I attended the Art Institute of Boston, Lesley University and I have taught at the New England School of Photography. I am indebted to my many teachers and mentors, especially my grandfather, who encouraged me to pursue photography when he gave me a Leicaflex camera for my eighteenth birthday.
I continue to shoot personal projects, drawing inspiration from smoke trees and the desert landscapes of the American Southwest, finding immense satisfaction in the many ways that my commercial and fine art photography inform one another.
